Covid vaccine UK: Over-50s could be offered booster jab from early as September

A third Covid vaccine jab could be given to over-50s from as early as September - though no decision has been made yet.

The Times reported third jabs would be given to over-50s and those with underlying health conditions in the autumn in a bid to eradicate the threat from Covid by Christmas

However, vaccine Minister Nadhim Zahawi said no decision has been made yet.

Despite this, he confirmed to the BBC that jabs would be ready to deploy by September.

Mr Zahawi told BBC Breakfast that the booster programme could begin in September "or later in the year, or early next year".

He explained that clinicians would evaluate how the vaccine protection, following the first two doses, had lasted. This will impact when the third vaccine programme will be rolled out.

Clinical trials will also investigate mixing different vaccines to see what will offer the most protection.

It comes as Scotland prepares for further restrictions to lift later this month, which will see people allowed in each other's homes for the first time in months.

Edinburgh is among the local authorities in Scotland that are on track for level two Covid restrictions.
