Covid vaccine passports trial 'to be announced by Boris Johnson for next month'

Covid vaccine passports could be introduced in the country for a trial next month, a national newspaper has reported.

Theatres and stadiums are being looked at to trial the scheme under plans discussed by government ministers, the Mail reports.

It was reported that the trial plan will be introduced after work is finished on an updated version of the NHS Covid app which will let users prove they have had the jab.

The passports could also be used eventually in pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and cinemas, the Mail added.

Ministers have been warned against introducing vaccine passports by a cross-party group of politicians including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey.

More than 70 MPs, along with peers from the House of Lords, have launched a cross-party campaign to oppose the move which they say would be “divisive and discriminatory”.

It comes after Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer suggested the “British instinct” could be against the use of such a scheme.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday defended the suggestion, stating that “there’s definitely going to be a world in which international travel will use vaccine passports”.

In a pledge, signed by Mr Corbyn and Sir Ed, as well as other prominent figures such as Conservative former leader Sir Iain Duncan-Smith, Labour former shadow chancellor John McDonnell and ex-Lib Dem leader Tim Farron, the group warns the Government against bringing in such a proposal.

The pledge states: “We oppose the divisive and discriminatory use of Covid status certification to deny individuals access to general services, businesses or jobs.”
