Covid vaccine: Over-70s to get booster jab from September to protect against variants

People aged 70 and over are set to begin receiving coronavirus boosters jabs from September to protect against new variants.

UK vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi told the Daily Telegraph the over-70s, health and social care staff and the clinically vulnerable would receive the third booster dose.

Mr Zahawi revealed that the "most likely date" for booster jabs to begin would be September.

He said deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam thought "that if we are going to see a requirement for a booster jab to protect the most vulnerable, [it] would be around September".

Scientists have been developing booster jabs to protect people against Covid variants, with health minister Edward Argar revealing the government was anticipating an annual jab could be required.

Much like the initial vaccine rollout, the booster jabs would initially be given to the most vulnerable people in the top four priority groups.

Earlier this month, it emerged Edinburgh's coronavirus vaccination rate was shown to be the lowest in Scotland, according to the latest figures.

Data published by Public Health Scotland has stated that 30.4 per cent of those in the city have had their first dose of the vaccine, which is currently behind other council areas.

Labour MP for Edinburgh South Ian Murray said he has been contacted by vaccinators in Edinburgh who have said they could dramatically increase rates if more people were offered appointments.

It comes as a brand new mass vaccination centre opened near Edinburgh, which is set to jab thousands of people every week.

Gorebridge Leisure Centre, in Midlothian, was the latest venue to be turned into an NHS Lothian vaccination site as the rollout continues across the country.
