Covid vaccine Ireland: People aged 25-29 told when they'll receive jab if they register today

The CEO of the HSE has said that those people aged between 25-29 who register for the vaccine today will receive the jab within the next three weeks.

Speaking on Morning Ireland, Paul Reid said: "People registering today aim to have it in a three week period from the time you register to the time you get your vaccine.

"So some people will begin to get notifications next week of appointments the following week."

Mr Reid also said he hopes the 18-24 cohort will be brought forward like the 25-29 group has been.

With the Delta variant beginning to make its impact felt, the expected surge of new cases has already started with close to 1,000 people contracting Covid yesterday.

Reid has said that there has been an increase in the number of younger people that have been hospitalised too.

Mr Reid added: "We are seeing transmission levels at a high level in the younger population. That being said, what we do know is Covid over the past 16 months, causes the most harm to the older population.

"It's too early to assess the numbers of people who have been hospitalised at the minute but what we can say after talking to some of our lead consultants across the country, increasingly they're seeing more younger people. Our GPs are referring more younger people to hospitals.

"And the concern is not just about hospitalisations, the concern for younger people is long Covid and we have many instances of where people may have been hospitalised but long Covid can significantly impact younger people as well. It's too early to determine a trend of those 80 or so patients but are seeing trends with younger people, certainly more cases and some referalls."
