COVID vaccine eligibility checker updated to include pregnant women in phase 1b

Last week the ABC revealed that the eligibility checker had not been updated, meaning women could not book appointments. (ABC News: Emma Machan)

The federal government has updated the national vaccine eligibility checker to include pregnant women, two weeks after they were made a priority in the rollout and were put in phase 1b.

It means pregnant women can now book their COVID-19 vaccine appointments online.

Last month pregnant women were told they had been made a priority in the vaccine rollout and placed in phase 1b, making them immediately eligible for the Pfizer vaccine.

Women who contract COVID-19 when pregnant have an increased risk of severe illness, and it increases the risk of complications for the baby.

But the ABC revealed the national online eligibility form was never updated, meaning pregnant women under 40 could not book an appointment.

Multiple women contacted the ABC and said they were frustrated by the confusion and delays, and the lack of Pfizer supply at some GP clinics.

The health department has since contacted the ABC to confirm the form has now been updated to include pregnancy.

In June the expert health panel advising the government on the vaccine, ATAGI, and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), recommended that pregnant women be offered the Pfizer vaccine at any stage in their pregnancy.

"This is because the risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 is significantly higher for pregnant women and their unborn baby," ATAGI and RANZCOG said in a joint statement in June.

"Global surveillance data from large numbers of pregnant women have not identified any significant safety concerns with mRNA COVID-10 vaccines given at any stage of pregnancy."
