COVID updates: All the coronavirus news from around Australia

Coronavirus restrictions are being relaxed in many states as vaccination rates increase. (ABC News: Keane Bourke)

Here's a quick wrap of what's happening in COVID-19 news across Australia.

Victoria

Victoria has recorded 18 more COVID-19 deaths and 6,897 new cases.

The number of people in hospital has dropped to 255, down from 283 recorded yesterday.

There are 41 patients in intensive care units, five of whom are on ventilators.

NSW

Another nine people have died in NSW in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday.

There are 1,098 people in hospital, 49 of those in ICU.

There were 8,874 new cases recorded.

Tasmania

The state has reported two COVID patients in ICU, up from zero yesterday, and a jump in new cases in Tasmania.

There are 13 people in hospital with COVID, with six of them being treated specifically for their coronavirus symptoms.

The state recorded 957 new COVID cases in the latest reporting period, a jump from 734 yesterday.

Active cases in the state have now crept back over 5,000.

ACT

The territory has recorded 692 new COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm yesterday.

There are 45 people in hospital with the virus in Canberra but none are in intensive care.

Almost four in five (78 per cent) of Canberra children aged five to 11 have received a vaccine dose and more than 67 per cent of Canberrans aged 16 and older have received their booster.
