Covid update from Public Health Scotland as 8,203 new cases and 26 deaths confirmed

Another 8,203 cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed within the last 24 hours in Scotland.

Data has been published by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland (PHS) this afternoon as part of the national Covid-19 daily briefing.

Nationally, there are 1,560 patients with the disease being treated in hospital which is up 23 from yesterday's reported figure. There are currently 58 people being treated in ICUs.

The number of newly-reported positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has increased by 343. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 76,502 positive PCR tests in the region.

Of the new cases reported, 135 were in North Ayrshire, 127 attributed to East Ayrshire and 83 in South Ayrshire.

According to Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, South Lanarkshire has the highest rate in the country – at 1,581.3 as of Wednesday, January 12.

West Dunbartonshire has the second-highest infection rate at 1,576.9 while Inverclyde is third with 1,527.4.

In terms of Ayrshire's thee local authorities, North Ayrshire has the highest rate of 1,371.3; East Ayrshire's rate stands at 1,305.1 while South Ayrshire's is 1,205.6.

A total of 19 of Scotland's 32 council regions have an infection rate below the national average of 1,253.3.

A total of 26 new deaths mean 9,997 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 12,543 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, January 9 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 151,007 as of last night and 174,233 with Covid mentioned on the death certificate.

There are 138 patients with the disease being treated in Ayrshire hospitals, up four from yesterday, and fewer than five people in ICUs.

Nationally, a total of 4,395,793 people have received one dose of a Covid vaccine; 4,057,606 are double jabbed and 3,159,109 people have received a third dose/booster.
