The UK has recorded 42,848 cases and 127 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, according to official figures.

That compares to daily infections stood at 39,567 and fatalities at 131 last Saturday.

The number of booster vaccinations - or third doses - administered rises to 19,809,442 which is 34. per cent of the population aged 12 and over.

The Government has promised to offer all over-18s a booster vaccine by the end of January.

The UK Health Security Agency said on Friday that another 75 cases of Omicron had been found in England.

It brings the total number of confirmed cases in England to at least 104 - with some of the newest cases not linked to travel, and instead caught within the community.

The individuals who have tested positive, and their contacts, have been asked to self-isolate, and work is under way to identify any links to travel.

It comes as there has been a reported rise in the number of children admitted to hospital in South Africa, the epicentre of the newly identified Omicron variant, but cases are “mild”, a public health expert has said.
