Covid travel insurance update and what you must do before leaving UK

After spending so much time at home, many of us are keen to get away this summer and with restrictions for returning to the UK easing, doing so seems much simpler.

However, with many other nations around the globe still having some covid rules and the ongoing pandemic, people may claim on their travel insurance for things they wouldn't have before. These include needing medical treatment for coronavirus while abroad, and having plans cancelled by covid.

People may also run up transport and accommodation costs if they get covid while outside the UK. For example, if you have to stay in a quarantine hotel.

There are a number of questions travellers may have about travel insurance and which circumstances it is valid in. Confused.com has taken a look and is advising holidaymakers on what they should do.

In general, the insurance comparison site says, most travel insurance policies cover you if you catch Covid-19 before your trip or while you’re away. It adds: "On typical policies though, this is where the cover would usually stop."

Most policies, Confused.com said, will cover you if you can't travel as you or someone in your party has tested positive for the virus. Similarly, most policies will cover medical treatment or a trip extension due to you or someone in your group contracting covid while abroad.

Few policies cover the event of another UK lockdown or restrictions, or changes in FCDO advice, that mean you can't travel. Overseas restrictions changing, are "generally not covered", it said.

Confused.com says, before you set off, you should "check all the details on your policy, not just those relating to Covid-19. Make sure you have proper cover for things like your luggage and emergency medical cover too."
