The government streamlined the traffic-light system this week in a significant change to international travel rules — but there are still different test requirements.
As of October 4, the travel traffic-light system is divided into two official classifications: 'non-red' and 'red list' countries.
This means that green and amber list destinations have merged together into the non-red classification.
The previous restrictions for amber list countries are now the default for travellers coming from non-red list countries.
In September, the Scottish Government allowed travellers returning to Scotland from non-red list countries to book their own private test providers, allowing for more choice, flexibility and possible savings.
Notably, the rules in England and Scotland are not the same.

Travellers returning to England may now take rapid lateral flow tests on day two rather than PCR tests.
In Scotland, PCR tests on return home remain in place.
The eligible vaccinated traveller policy recognises vaccination certification from travellers from a select number of countries, including the EU and the USA.
In a change of rules, the UK began recognising the vaccination certification of travellers vaccinated in Canada, Australia, Israel and New Zealand as of October 4.
Michael Matheson, the Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport, said the simplification of the system recognises the success of global vaccination programmes.

He said: “This is a major step but one with sensible safeguards built in recognising the success of the Scottish Government’s vaccination programme.
“The expansion of the eligible vaccinated traveller policy combined with the changes to the traffic light system will provide a welcome boost to Scotland’s tourism industry."

What covid tests are needed leaving Scotland
Scotland no longer requires pre-departure tests, but current requirements for your destination country should be consulted in advance.
What covid tests are needed arriving in Scotland
Testing rules depend on whether you are fully vaccinated and from where you are travelling.
Fully-vaccinated travellers from non-red list countries who have been fully vaccinated in a country that is recognised by the eligible vaccinated traveller policy will no longer be required to provide proof of a negative test result before they can travel to Scotland.
Over 18, fully vaccinated and travelling from non-red list countries:
- Take a Covid-19 PCR test within two days of arriving in Scotland — travellers can book tests from the NHS or from a list of private providers
Over 18, not fully vaccinated and travelling from non-red list countries:
- Take a PCR test before travelling
- Take PCR tests on or before day two and on or after day eight of your 10 day isolation — travellers can book tests from the NHS or from a list of private providers
Self-isolate at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days
Under 18 and travelling from non-red list countries:
- Children aged 11 to 17 must take a PCR test within two days of arriving in Scotland (children under 11 are exempt)
Travelling from a red list country regardless of vaccination status:
- Take a PCR test in the three days before you travel to Scotland (children aged 11 and younger do not need to take a test)
- Book a 10 day hotel quarantine
- If exempt from hotel quarantine: take two PCR tests
