Covid tracker app Ireland: Dreaded alert that pops up to tell you you're at risk

Over one million people have now downloaded the Covid tracker app since its launch on Tuesday.

The app is designed to enhance contract tracing measures and to help manage the spread of coronavirus.

HSE CEO Paul Reid said: "The app comes at an important time as we begin to move about more and will support us in managing future cases.

"I would encourage those who have not yet downloaded the app to do so, and for the 1 million people who have already downloaded the app, I would ask them to share it with their friends and families.

"The more people who download the app the greater its impact will be."

The main feature of the app will be alerting someone if they have been in close contact with a confirmed case.

By using location data the app will be able to verify this and will then send a push alert to your phone.

The message will read: "Close contact warning: The COVID tracker app has detected that you may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.

"Call back: You have been queued for a phone call and we will try and call you as soon as possible."

This is how the app gets that information:

  • any phone you are in close contact with that also has the app.
  • the distance between your phone and another app users' phone.
  • the length of time your phone is near another app users' phone.
