Covid tier January review date as government moves millions up into highest restrictions

The government today announced the results of its latest Covid-19 tiers review, with millions more people plunged into the highest level of Tier 4 restrictions.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the changes as the situation with the virus threatens to spiral out of control in some parts of the country.

He confirmed that the Liverpool City Region will be placed into Tier 3 restrictions from tomorrow - the second highest level of measures.

This was the second official government review of the new Covid-19 tier system which came into effect as the national lockdown ended on December 2.

However, the government has been forced to announce other changes and place other areas into higher tiers at different stages in December because of rising cases and a new, highly infection strain of the virus.

The government has said that it will continue to review which areas are in which tiers every two weeks and the next review is set to take place on January 13.

The government is coming under increased pressure to announce a full national lockdown before that point, however.
