Covid third wave prep underway: AIIMS-Raipur sets up PSA oxygen plant

Raipur: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur is setting up an oxygen plant based on Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology. PSA technology separates oxygen from ambient air.

The plant is being installed with the help of Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

As per AIIMS administration, the new facility will enable to meet the emergency requirement of oxygen in the future, in case, if there will be third wave of Covid-19. AIIMS also installed and started using 30 high-end ventilators in different ICUs for Covid and non-Covid patients.

The new plant will absorb the oxygen from the air and supply it to different wards through the existing network of oxygen supply pipelines. The plant is one of the largest PSA plants in the state. All ventilators have been installed in different ICUs. Now, AIIMS has 155 ventilators for severe patients.

AIIMS already has its dedicated oxygen plant with 30,000 litres per minute capacity. It is a primary source of oxygen supply in different wards. Besides this, 98 cylinder bank is working as a secondary source of oxygen supply. With the help of PM Care Funds, AIIMS has installed another PSA plant on the campus.

According to AIIMS director Dr Nitin M Nagarkar, AIIMS-R utilized around 5,000 litres per minute capacity during second wave. “The plant has been installed in mission mode approach within a very short period. This will add to the existing capacity of the oxygen generation plant. We are hopeful that new capacity will be sufficient to deal with the expected influx of Covid patients during the third wave”, he said.
