Covid tests in Scotland will be 'more routine' in new year

Community covid testing trials are being expanded in the hope of wider routine screening for people without symptoms.

Nicola Sturgeon set out the latest progress shortly before a small-scale pilot scheme begins in Johnstone, Renfrewshire.

Today, a number of mobile centres started to offer quick tests in other hard-hit areas of west central Scotland.

"The lessons that we learn from these trials will then inform our plans to expand community testing much more extensively and much more routinely early in the new year," Sturgeon said at today's coronavirus briefing in Edinburgh.

Johnstone is in a level 4 area, like Glasgow, taking in 11 neighbouring council regions.

A mobile testing unit opened in Clackmannanshire last Thursday.

Today in Glasgow, there are new sites in Dalmarnock and the South Side.

There are also new units in Stewarton, East Ayrshire, and in Girvan, South Ayrshire.

The quick-test centre is opening in Johnstone in Renfrewshire on Wednesday. The “lateral flow” tests are much quicker than the PCR tests most Scots will be used to if they’ve been sent for a check.

Speaking at the Government's coronavirus briefing, Sturgeon said: "We do hope that identifying more people who are positive will help us ensure they are not spreading the virus. That's why we're currently focusing these trials, these pilot programmes, on areas with high prevalence.

"If you live in one of these areas, I'd encourage you to come forward for testing. You give yourself the chance of finding out if you have the virus, if you don’t have symptoms, but you’re also helping with that collective effort to try to break the chains of transmission."
