Covid tests for fully vaccinated set 'to be scrapped this month' as travel restrictions ease

Day two Covid tests for fully vaccinated travellers are said to be getting scrapped this month.

According to a government source, it is expected that the latest travel update will announce that travellers who are fully vaccinated will not have to take a day two Covid test once they've arrived in the UK.

According to the Sunday Times, a source close to Transport Minister Grant Shapps has said that testing requirements will ease further, just in time for the February break in England.

The source told the publication: "We are looking at removing all Covid tests for vaccinated travellers by the end of January, which is likely to coincide with the review of the plan B measures on January 26".

Towards the end of 2021 the Prime Minister announced he was enforcing Plan B just before Christmas for England, requiring people to wear masks on public spaces, a requirement already in place in Scotland.

So far, the Scottish Government has followed suit in terms of Covid travel rules, acknowledging that if Scotland had different international travel rules to England, the Scottish transport and travel industry would suffer.

Currently the rules are that those who are fully vaccinated no longer need to take a pre-departure test before arriving in the UK and only need to take a day two Covid test.

These tests can be lateral flow tests from a private firm, but not from the free ones from the NHS.

Non-vaccinated travellers still need to take a pre-departure test, take a PCR test on day two and day eight of their arrival and isolate for 10 days.

Already the easing of Covid testing has been welcomed by airlines with the move to scrap pre-departure tests this month led to a near 200 per cent rise in easyJet bookings.

British Airways also reported that searches for holidays rose by nearly 40 per cent.
