Covid surge: Positivity rate springs to 0.21% from 0.05% in Bhopal

BHOPAL: Positivity rate for Covid-19 testing has increased from 0.05% to 0.21% in a month in Bhopal. Positivity rate or the rate of suspected people tested and diagnosed with Covid-19, is a clear indication of public health risk.

A speedy vaccination programme has meant lesser number of people need hospitalization as compared to the second wave of Covid witnessed earlier this year. However, the current infected include youngsters too. “Course correction and restriction from further escalation can be achieved. People need to avoid unnecessary travel, follow Covid-19 protocols and get vaccinated,” said Bhopal chief medical and health officer, Dr Prabhakar Tiwari.

Roughly 60% of the city’s population is fully vaccinated. To achieve some level of ‘herd immunity’, nearly 80 to 90% of the population needs to be vaccinated. With children consisting of around five lakh population, Bhopal would require 100% adult vaccination to reach a safe threshold, according to experts. Another unknown in the mix is mutation and variants of the infection.

On Wednesday, the number of new cases were in the single digit. However, the city is still left with 40 cases of the infection. Around 12 cases have been linked to Vidisha district which has seen a sharp rise in infections.
