Covid Scotland: Two Edinburgh neighbourhoods free of Covid as restrictions ease

Edinburgh's coronavirus cases were at an all time high only a few weeks ago, with almost every neighbourhood in the 400+ cases per 100,000 category.

Now, with over half of Scotland's population double jabbed with the all-important vaccine, cases in the capital have begun to steady out and only one death confirmed in the City of Edinburgh.

Neighbourhoods of Cramond and Mortonhall and Anwickhill have reported no Covid cases over the last week, meaning they are virus-free for the first time since February this year.

Just last week, both neighbhourhoods were in the 200-399 per 100,000 category, reporting 12 cases altogether, in a combined population of 5,298.

There are still over a thousand cases of the virus being reported in Scotland everyday, but hospital admissions are extremely few and deaths also in very low numbers.

Neighbourhoods with the highest number of cases include West Pilton, Craigmillar and Morningside, who reported 98 cases of the virus altogether, with a combined population of 16,652.

This decline in Covid cases in the capital coincides with the news that a Scotland vaccine passport app is now in development by the same company who created the Protect Scotland app in 2020.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced in her briefing on Tuesday that, "We will hopefully see a fall in cases over the coming days.

"If that happens, that creates the conditions we hope for a further easing of restrictions in the next few weeks."
