Covid Scotland: Two Edinburgh neighbourhoods become local hotspots as cases remain high

Two Edinburgh areas have continued to report higher case numbers than anywhere else in the city over the last week.

In recent weeks, the capital has seen a significant drop in the number of coronavirus cases as lockdown measures have continued.

On Tuesday, 466 new positive results were reported across Scotland, which the First Minister pointed out was a dramatic decrease in comparison to mid-January.

These figures are mirrored in Edinburgh, with many local areas reporting just two or fewer cases.

However, the most recent data published by Public Health Scotland has identified two areas where cases are still between 200-399 per 100,000 people.

Showing to be the city's most active hotspots, these are Bingham, Magdalene and the Christians, as well as Granton West and Salvesen.

The next category down is for areas reporting 100-199 cases per 100,000, and the areas in this figure are:

Hyvots and Gilmerton

Moredun and Craigour

Northfield and Piershill

Craigmillar

Jewel, Brunstane and Newcraighall

Granton and Royston mains

Fernieside and Moredun South

Leith

Carrick Knowe

The Calders

Stenhouse and Saughton Mains

The new data comes as Nicola Sturgeon announced some restrictions will ease across Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland from Friday.

This will include an increase on the number of people allowed to meet outside from two people from two households to four people from two households.

Some outdoor non-contact sport will also be able to resume, as well as exercise classes.
