Covid Scotland: Two Edinburgh neighbourhoods become capital hotspots as cases soar

Edinburgh has been shown to have two Covid hotspots across the city as the number of cases takes a sudden rise.

As almost all remaining lockdown restrictions have been lifted across Scotland for over a week, recent data has highlighted an increase in transmission, including in the capital.

On Wednesday, 429 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in the NHS Lothian health board, with 275 in the City of Edinburgh alone.

However, statistics from Public Health Scotland have shown two areas where transmission is significantly higher than the rest of the city, with a case rate of 400+ per 100,000 of population.

Over the last seven days, these have been both Clovenstone and Wester Hailes, as well as Craigmillar.

Clovenstone and Wester Hailes have reported 15 new transmissions in seven days, with Craigmillar reaching 24 in just one week.

It comes as Scotland recorded 10 coronavirus deaths and 2,538 new cases in the past 24 hours, the latest Scottish Government figures show.

Hospital admissions are currently showing a total of 324 patients in hospital with Covid-19, as a further 39 in intensive care units across the country.

The latest figures for Thursday will be updated at 2pm.
