Covid Scotland: The five spots in Edinburgh with the lowest rates as case numbers soar

Only five areas in Edinburgh are not reporting high rates of coronavirus, according to the latest figures.

The capital is currently experiencing both the highest case rate and numbers in Scotland, with 594 new cases of Covid-19 reported on Tuesday (July 13) alone.

With level two restrictions currently in place in the city, and with level zero to be introduced on Monday, it is expected that transmission will remain high for the next few weeks.

In Edinburgh, most areas have been classed by Public Health Scotland as having the highest rate of infection, meaning that there is 400+ cases per 100,000 of population in a seven day period.

However, there are five neighbourhoods around the city that are reporting much lower transmission over the last week.

With a case rate of 50-99 per 100,0000, the areas are:

  • Murrayfield and Ravelston
  • Comely Bank
  • Newington and Dalkeith Road
  • Morningside and Craighouse
  • Mortonhall and Anwickhill

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon confirmed Scotland will move to level zero on Monday, despite the high case numbers and transmission rates.

Despite daily figures seeing over 2,000 new cases per day, the First Minister highlighted the continuation in low hospital admissions, ICU admissions and deaths.

However, some "modifications" have been made to the initial plans level zero, which will include a midnight curfew for hospitality, an extended 'work from home' message and the continued use of face coverings.
