Covid Scotland: Sturgeon confirms strict new self-isolation rules as Omicron cases soar

New self-isolation rules have been announced in a bid to control the spread of Covid-19.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon addressed MSPs in Holyrood today and announced that stricter rules are now in place due to the fast spreading Omicron variant.

As of 5pm yesterday, there have been 99 Omicron cases detected in Scotland.

The Scottish Government has agreed not to lift any restrictions but strengthen the current mitigations.

This comes after the variant has been found in nine of the 14 health boards, suggesting community transmission is occurring.

Now, those who are household contacts of close contacts will have to isolate if the Omicron variant is detected.

Speaking to MSPs, the First Minister said: "Test & Protect is deploying enhanced contract tracing for all cases with the S-gene drop-out that is indicative of Omicron - for these cases, household contacts of close contacts, rather than just the close contacts themselves, are being asked to test and isolate. If you are asked to do this, please comply."

She added: "More generally, for non Omicron cases, if you have symptoms of Covid, please get a PCR test and self isolate until you get the result.

"If your result is negative you can end isolation at that point if you are double vaccinated. If positive, you must isolate for the full ten days.

"And crucially, please remember that you can have this virus even if you have no symptoms. So testing regularly with lateral flow devices is essential."

Sturgeon urged people to continue to take lateral flow tests and more regularly, before seeing people, going to shops and bars.
