Covid Scotland: Spain could welcome tourists from May as part of vaccine passport plan

Spain could welcome tourists from the start of May as part of a Covid vaccine passport plan.

The country's tourism minister Reyes Maroto said they could begin reopening for holidays early this summer, Sky News reports.

This comes after Greece announced plans this week to welcome foreign tourists from May, regardless of whether they've been vaccinated. Travellers would be required to return a negative Covid-19 test to enter.

Despite this, with travel restrictions still in place, Scots have been warned not to plan any overseas trips for the time being, especially given how uncertain the global picture is at present.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said last month that Scotland will move to a tier system at the end of April, with a phased exit from lockdown expected across the country.

But it may be too early to start thinking about foreign holidays given fears about the virus, and in particular new variants, being imported into Scotland.

At present anyone arriving in Scotland from other countries is required to isolate at a quarantine hotel.

For people in England foreign holidays could be allowed from May 17, however UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said there are still a lot of questions to answer over how safe it will be to travel overseas in June.
