Covid Scotland: Record number of cases recorded as five new deaths confirmed

Nearly 3,000 covid cases have been recorded in Scotland in the past 24 hours, alongside five new reported deaths.

It is the highest number of positive cases recorded in Scotland since the beginning of the pandemic.

The latest figures released by Public Health Scotland today means that Scotland's death toll of people with a confirmed case of coronavirus has risen to 7,706.

Meanwhile, of the 2,999 new cases, which made up 7.7% of all tests, 702 were recorded in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and 341 in Lanarkshire.

The statistics are part of a wider trend of rising cases across the country. At the peak in January 22, there were 2,054 in hospital, and the highest number of patients in ICU was 221 in April 2020.

17 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed coronavirus, while 177 were in hospital.

3,695,303 people have also now received the first dose of the Covid vaccination while 2,631,533 have now received their second dose.
