Covid Scotland: Record 7,113 new cases in 24 hours confirmed as positive tests soar

Covid cases have soared by 7,113 in Scotland - the highest number recorded in a 24-hour period since the beginning of the pandemic.

The latest statistics released by the Scottish Government confirm that 13.5% of all tests carried out yesterday returned positive results.

Of these, 2,211 were recorded in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board area, while 1,304 were in Lanarkshire.

The previous record for cases registered in a single day was 6,835, which was recorded two days ago on Friday (August 27).

The Scottish Government has cautioned that the high figures include "a larger than usual proportion of specimens that were processed more than 48 hours ago. This is due to the high volumes of tests currently being received".

No new deaths of people with a confirmed covid case were recorded today, however this statistic is often artificially low on Sunday due to registration offices being closed during the weekend.

52 people were in intensive care yesterday coronavirus while 507 people were in hospital.

4,101,311 people have now received the first dose of the covid vaccination while 3,655,287 have received their second dose.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf is urging under-40s to get their second vaccine and not "leave the job half done" amid rising cases.

The Scottish Government said the number of cases is rising and that about two thirds of new ones are in under-40s.

Over the past month, 30% of Covid-19 related hospital admissions were in those aged under 40, and the majority of hospital admissions amongst unvaccinated people were in the under-40s age group (58%).

Mr Yousaf said the virus is "still a significant threat" and urged people in that age group who have still to receive their second dose to book an appointment or go to a drop-in clinic.
