Covid Scotland: Record 5,021 new confirmed virus cases in a single day as infection soars

Scotland has recorded more than 5,000 new cases of Covid-19 for the first time ever.

The shocking figure has just been published the Scottish Government, who also confirm five further deaths from the virus in the last 24 hours.

The news comes just a day after Nicola Sturgeon cautioned that she "can't completely rule out" fresh lockdown restrictions.

She said: "If this surge continues, and if it accelerates, and if we start to see evidence of a substantial increase in serious illness as a result, we cannot completely rule out having to reimpose some restrictions."

The latest figures show 5,021 new covid cases confirmed in the last 24 hours, that's 11 per cent of those tested.

Sadly five more deaths directly related to the virus were recorded and 391 people were in hospital with a recently confirmed case, 44 of them in intensive care.

Speaking at an unscheduled briefing yesterday the First Minister reminded people that while the risk of serious health harm has been significantly weakened by the virus, the link has not been completely broken.

And she pointed out that a decision to reimpose any decisions will not be taken lightly, adding: "Of course, we hope not to have to do that - and if we did, we would be as limited and as proportionate as possible.

"However - as has been the case throughout so far, and up until this point - what happens in the next few weeks will depend, to a large extent, on all of us."
