Covid Scotland: Police warning as people 'gather' at East Lothian beaches in lockdown

Police have issued a warning after a wave of drivers headed to local beauty spots following a bout of sunny weather amid lockdown.

Officers revealed that "large numbers" of vehicles and people had headed to beaches in East Lothian, including Musselburgh Promenade and Gullane.

Police have urged visitors to respect residents when parking and warned that people should not be leaving their homes unless it's for essential purposes, which includes daily exercise.

Chief Inspector Neil Mitchell, Local Area Commander, said: "While I appreciate people want to make the most of exercising outdoors, I ask that courtesy and respect is shown for the area and its residents.

"Please be mindful about road access and park responsibly and safely to ensure a clear route is available at all times.

"I fully recognise the impact the restrictions are having on people’s lives. However, it is clear that significant sacrifices are vital to help suppress the spread of coronavirus.

"The Chief Constable has made it clear that our approach throughout the pandemic has not changed.

"Police Scotland officers will continue to support people to follow the regulations and encourage them to take personal responsibility.
