Covid Scotland: Panto performance cancelled as theatre cites coronavirus concern

A second Lothians Christmas pantomime has fallen to covid concerns amid a surge in cases across the region.

The Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh confirmed the Monday evening performance of Hansel and Gretel had been axed due to fears over the safety of audiences, crew and staff members.

Theatre bosses said the decision had been taken as a ‘precautionary measure’ but did not say whether the situation would affect future performances.

It comes just hours after the White Christmas musical at the Edinburgh Playhouse was forced to cut its run in the Capital short amid fears over an outbreak within the venue.

A statement from the Brunton read: "Due to a covid issue backstage, we are taking precautions by cancelling today's 7pm performance of Hansel and Gretel.

"The Brunton has strict covid measures in place for the safety and wellbeing of our staff, performers and audiences and this is our highest priority.

"We comply with all of the Scottish Government’s covid-19 guidance on operating safely and will continue to do so. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

"Customers will be contacted by our box office with alternative options."

Producers of Edinburgh’s White Christmas stage show have axed the remainder of its run after cancelling weekend performances.

Cases across the NHS Lothian health board region have skyrocketed in recent days, with almost 1,000 recorded in the Capital alone on Monday.

Data from Public Health Scotland showed 6,734 new cases across the country in the run up to Christmas Day, with thousands now set to miss out on seeing family members due to self-isolation.
