Covid Scotland: Over 1,900 new coronavirus cases confirmed as Nicola Sturgeon begins lockdown update

1,905 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland overnight, according to the latest Scottish Government data released today.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon begins her special coronavirus lockdown update in the Scottish Parliament.

The Scottish Government confirmed 1,905 new positive tests had been recorded on 4 January.

Of those tests reporting results, 15 per cent were positive.

It remains above the target of five per cent set by the World Health Organisation, a measure they say indicates whether a country has the pandemic under control or whether it is growing exponentially.

No figures for those in hospital were reported.

Nicola Sturgeon said the rising numbers of cases were of serious concern, and an expert group has recommened she close schools until 1 February.

The First Minister may also announce tougher lockdown rules for Scots.
