Covid Scotland: 'No plans' for Nicola Sturgeon to implement twice-weekly free testing

There are no plans for Scotland to follow Boris Johnson's plans to offer free coronavirus tests to anyone in England, according to a report.

The Daily Record says that Nicola Sturgeon won't use the Prime Minister's idea to provide lateral flow tests to anyone even if they don't have symptoms. Johnson said on Monday that the tests, which provide results in around 30 minutes, will be available to people in England twice-weekly from Friday.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar called on Sturgeon to follow the UK Government's plan and make the tests available to Scots.

However the Record reports that this isn't expected to happen, and the Scottish Government would continue with workplace testing for high risk staff.

A Scottish government spokeswoman said: “Scotland’s Testing Strategy will support the easing of restrictions and a return to everyday activities in Scotland.”

“Existing testing routes will continue, and be expanded, to help suppress Covid-19 to the lowest possible level, alongside other measures such as vaccination and the levels system.

“This includes expanding the existing testing routes that are in place in hospitals, care homes, and schools, as well as wider community testing to spot asymptomatic cases in high prevalence areas.”

The official added: “We are looking carefully at the detail of the UK Government announcement and considering any implications of this for Scotland’s Testing Strategy.”
