Covid Scotland: No limit on Christmas Day 2021 gatherings announced

Nicola Sturgeon will not propose limits on the size of household gatherings for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

However, the First Minister has warned that “targeted and proportionate” measures will be introduced as a trade-off for allowing families to meet at Christmas.

Speaking to the Scottish Parliament, the FM asked Scots to limit their socialising to a maximum of three households in the run up to Christmas in order to curb the spread of the new Covid-19 strain, Omicron.

Sturgeon said: "I want to be clear, I am not asking anyone to ‘cancel’ Christmas.

"Turning to Christmas Day specifically – or Christmas Eve or Boxing Day or whenever you have your main family celebration - we are not asking you to cancel or change your plans, and we are not proposing limits on the size of household gatherings."

Sturgeon added that places of worship will also remain open on Christmas Day but advised Scots "to your celebrations as small as your family circumstances allow is sensible too."

Last year Scots were only allowed to travel on Christmas Day and only a maximum of 8 people from 3 households were permitted to mix on the big day.
