Covid Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon to give update today amid high case numbers

Nicola Sturgeon is set to give an urgent update on Scotland’s battle with coronavirus at Holyrood this afternoon.

The First Minister will address MSP’s and field questions as cases remain high across the country - despite a slight fall in new infections on Tuesday.

Just under 5,700 new transmissions of covid-19 were recorded in yesterday’s 24-hour testing period, down from more than over 7,000 on Monday.

In a programme for government announcement at the Scottish Parliament, the First Minister said signs of a plateau in case numbers was promising, but warned the recent ‘surge’ following the complete relaxation of restrictions was not over yet.

She said: "We are currently experiencing a surge in cases - though possibly seeing an early sign that the rate of increase is beginning to slow."

Wednesday's update could feature more information on the contentious 'vaccine passport' scheme announced last week.

Under plans put forward by the Holyrood leader, those hoping to attend large-scale indoor and outdoor events in the autumn, including concerts and football matches, would require documentation proving they had received both doses of their covid-19 vaccination to do so.

Here is everything you need to know about today's announcement.

What time will the statement start?

The First Minister is due to speak at around 2:15pm following portfolio questions in the Scottish Parliament.

She will then field questions from fellow MSP's on the points laid out in her statement.

As ever, the timing of her speech may vary slightly.
