Covid Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon to give coronavirus update today after 4,000 daily cases recorded

Nicola Sturgeon is set to update Scots on the country's covid-19 situation today.

The First Minister hosted a Scottish Government briefing on Tuesday afternoon and the following day Tweeted her intention to provide a further update before the end of the week.

Yesterday, Scotland recorded more than 4,000 coronavirus cases in a day for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Scottish Government figures published on Thursday show there were 4,234 positive tests over the past 24 hours.

Six deaths of Covid patients were also registered, meaning the death toll under this daily measure - of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - now stands at 7,722.

It is the third time this week that the record for positive cases over 24 hours has been broken.

The First Minister said on Tuesday that the peak may have been passed as she stressed that increasing case numbers come amid a context of loosened restrictions and less need for hospital treatment.

And, responding to Wednesday's numbers, she Tweeted: "Today's reported Covid figures show a further increase - however, the vaccination impact is still clear.

"Vaccines are now doing much of the work we needed heavy restrictions to do in the last wave.

"And thankfully, we continue to see a much lower burden of serious illness."

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to host her latest Covid-19 briefing this afternoon from St Andrew's House.
