Covid Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon states hairdressers to open 'as quick as possible'

Nicola Sturgeon has said she will reopen hairdressers "as quickly as possible" after the sector has been closed for months.

Hairdressers and barbers were forced to close after Christmas, when Scotland moved into a level four lockdown, and have remained shut ever since.

However, today the First Minister said she would allow haircuts again as soon as the data and restrictions allow them to.

Speaking at the Covid-19 Holyrood committee, MSP Annabelle Ewing had raised a question as to when the sector would be able to take customers again.

With hopes of getting a provisional date for hairdressers, Ms Ewing said: "When can we go to the hairdresser, if you're not able to give us a specific date this morning, are you able to indicate a date that we might be able to go to the hairdresser."

According to the Daily Record, Nicola Sturgeon said she was also desperate to see a reopening after weeks without a haircut.

In response to Ewing, the First Minister said: "I'm not going to give a date.

"I can give you an absolute 100% assurance that I will not delay our ability to visit the hairdresser any longer that is necessary.

"I'm saying that out of pure self interest because anybody looking at me can see.

"There are still conspiracy theories that circulate on social media from time-to-time that I've got a secret hairdresser somewhere.

"That's not true, but secondly I don't know how anybody looking at me right now can reach that conclusion.

"No hairdresser can take responsibility for this - so hairdressers just as quickly as is possible to do."

It comes as certain restrictions will be eased from Friday (March 12) such as outdoor exercise classes and meetings.

The number of people that can meet outside will rise from two people from two different households to up to four people from two different households.
