Covid Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon says travel bans and other strict measures could come within days

Scots will see a new approach to the management of coronavirus in the coming days with Nicola Sturgeon set to announce a new system to replace the current rules.

Current public health rules banning indoor gatherings will remain in place as a temporary measure until a more permanent tiered approach is introduced.

But Nicola Sturgeon said she could not rule out the need to introduce greater restrictions if the surge in cases seen in recent days does not reduce.

"Although we have put in place tough measures, we cannot rule out having to go further in the future," Sturgeon said.

Welsh Government rules announced on Wednesday to stop travel from high prevalence areas in different parts of the UK from travelling to the country are also being considered by the Scottish Government.

The First Minister: "As we consider these issues, plan future steps and where necessary, take emergency action, we will seek to ensure that parliament is fully informed and involved in these decisions."

The SNP leader said the Scottish Parliament would soon debate this new strategic framework to "strengthen our resilience to live with this virus".

New measures on how to increase compliance with self-isolation will also be put in place, the First Minister said.

Nicola Sturgeon added that the framework would go beyond the tiered approach for restriction, and will detail support for businesses in the future should they be asked to close, as well as support for people on a low income who have to self-isolate.

She said: "A global pandemic of an infectious virus will require emergency action and quick legislation, but as we prepare to live with Covid for an extended period, we recognise that this imperative must be balanced by the need for robust and, whenever possible, pre-emptive parliamentary scrutiny."
