Covid Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon says 'summer school can't be ruled out' for pupils

Nicola Sturgeon has said in today's coronavirus briefing at the Scottish Parliament that summer school can't be ruled out for helping children affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The First Minister voiced concerns over the long term impact that coronavirus lockdown school closures may have on Scotland's youngsters, stating that she doesn't want them to 'pay the price for the once in a century pandemic'.

She said: "We should consider summer school. There is a big job to make sure that the impact on our young doesn't turn into a long term impact that saddles them for the rest of their lives.

"We need to help them with additional issues like not seeing their friends, their anxiety and not seeing loved ones.

Pupils in Primary 1-3 will go back to school full-time from February 22 - with some senior pupils able to attend classes for key practical assessments.

"We need to make sure this generation of young people don’t pay the price for the once in a century pandemic we are unfortunately living through."

Children in Scotland have reverted to online learning since the New Year after the country was plunged into a nationwide lockdown following a 24 hour period of Christmas household mixing.

Only vulnerable children and kids of key workers have been allowed to attend classes, with a phased return of all pupils set to begin at the end of this month.
