Covid Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon enforces home-working until January in emergency update

Scotland will see home-working rules be enforced until 2022 due to the surge in Omicron Covid cases.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that those who can be working at home should be until January as infection rates continue to rise around the country.

Due to concerns over the new variant, which has seen cases tenfold in the last week, the First Minister announced the measure in an update to the Scottish Parliament.

After stating that none of the existing coronavirus measures would be revoked, Sturgeon urged that employers should "ensure this is happening."

In recent weeks, the Scottish Government had advised businesses to encourage home-working again, however Tuesday's announcement stated that anyone working from home in the previous lockdowns should do so again.

With 99 cases of Omicron confirmed in Scotland, the FM said:

"I am asking everyone to make an extra effort to do so from now through the festive period and into January.

"Obviously, wear face coverings in indoor public places; ventilate rooms by opening windows; and ensure good hand hygiene.

"However, there are two important protections that I want to emphasise particularly strongly today.

"Firstly, working from home. We already advise people to work from home where practical. Today, I am asking employers to ensure this is happening.

"To be blunt, if you had staff working from home at this start of the pandemic, please now enable them to do so again.

"We are asking you to do this from now until the middle of January when we will review this advice again."

As well as cases of Omicron, 3,060 coronavirus cases in total were reported across Scotland in the last 24 hours, which is an 11 per cent increase in the last week.

Deeming it "inappropriate" to lift any of the current coronavirus measures, the FM also announced that 12 further deaths had been registered since Monday.

This takes the total number of deaths registered under the daily definition to 9,661.
