Covid Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon confirms new cases and deaths as country passes grim milestone

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed a further 54 deaths to coronavirus in Scotland.

This takes the total number in Scotland to just over 5,000, the First Minister has announced.

It came as Sturgeon confirmed 1,875 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, with the majority, over 600, identified in Glasgow.

This represented 12 per cent of those tests which reported results, above the target of five per cent set by the World Health Organisation.

1,717 people are currently in hospital, up by 53 on Monday, well over the peak reported in April last year.

133 people are being treated in intensive care units, and increase of 7.

In total, 5,023 have died as a result of the virus after testing positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.

Nicola Sturgeon said the death toll increasing over 5,000 was a reminder on the "heartbreaking toll" of the effect of the virus.

The First Minister also announced any changes to the current restrictions would be considered today, with an update in parliament tomorrow of any changes.
