Covid Scotland: Major Edinburgh vaccine centre to close for good later this month

Edinburgh's biggest mass vaccination site is set to close for good later this month.

NHS Lothian have confirmed that the site at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) will be shut down on September 19 as the rollout slows down.

After opening to the public in February, staff at the centre have administered over 130,000 first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to residents as well as over 120,000 second doses.

However, with the majority of the adult population in Edinburgh having being offered both doses, the site will close and focus will be put on smaller local pop-ups and vaccine sites.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, NHS Lothian nurse director, Pat Wynne, said: “Our teams have achieved a massive amount in such a short space of time and we are really grateful to them for making such tremendous efforts.

“They have helped provide protection to over quarter of a million people from across Lothian in just one centre alone – that is quite an achievement.”

The decision comes a few months after NHS Lothian also chose to close their vaccine site at Edinburgh Park in July, which was one of the biggest centres in the capital.

From September 19, Lowland Hall at Ingliston will become the largest mass site still running.
