Covid Scotland latest: Nicola Sturgeon warns 'not to book holidays or staycations'

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has warned people to avoid booking summer holidays abroad as it risks bringing new variants of coronavirus into Scotland.

The FM issued the stark advice during today's daily coronavirus briefing, stating that even if you book a holiday abroad for summer 2021, she "can't guarantee" that people will actually be able to go on them due to lockdown restrictions.

Nicola Sturgeon also urged the public to be "cautious" about booking holidays even domestically at the moment in order to prevent any rise in coronavirus figures.

Ms Sturgeon reiterated that travel restrictions were not likely to be eased until people in Scotland are vaccinated in greater numbers.

She said: "In terms of my advice to families I cannot give bespoke advice to every family or about every personal family decision across the country and I wouldn't assume to do so.

"I can only give you my best judgments about things from the perspective we are in just now and give you as much information as I can to guide the decisions you are taking.

"Now what I'm about to say because of the uncertainties I can't guarantee won't be different in a month or six weeks time in either direction. But right now today I would say to people not to book foreign holidays, not to book travel overseas because of everything we've talked about and the risks of importation and new variants in particular.

"And I would say to people just be cautious about booking holidays even domestically. I want nothing more than to say to you 'go and book staycations' because I want to support the tourist industry - the minute I think I can do that I will be doing that.

"If you want to do that and take the chance it will be ok that's not for me to decide for you but I can't guarantee to you right now that if you book a holiday even at home, even in another part of the UK I can't give you a 100% guarantee that by the time we get to the date of that holiday everything will be ok for you to go."
