Covid Scotland: How far you can travel under new 'Stay Local' lockdown rules

Last week Scotland entered new 'Stay Local' lockdown guidance after a reduction in Covid cases across the country allowed for 'Stay at Home' rules to be scrapped.

Nicola Sturgeon has said that the new rule will be in place for at least three weeks, with further changes to come to travel guidance on April 26.

But what is Stay Local and what makes it different from the previous Stay At Home rules in Scotland?

Under the new rules you can travel within your local council area for non-essential reasons.

This includes travelling within your local council area for activities such as non-essential shopping i.e. not just supermarkets etc. This can include travelling to a clothes shop offering click and collect services.

You should only travel outside your local authority area for essential reasons like work, school or seeking medical care - although employers should be ensuring that their staff work from home where possible.

Anyone leaving their local council area for non-essential reasons can be fined by Police Scotland for breaking the rules.

Nicola Sturgeon said: “That means the current travel restrictions, which prevent non-essential travel outside your own local authority area, will remain in place for another three weeks.

“I fully understand how frustrating that is for everybody – I share that frustration – like many of you, my family live in a different local authority to the one I live in, and so like anyone with loved ones in a different part of the country, I desperately want to see them in person."

Scotland is currently on course to further ease restrictions on the planned date of April 26 - with Scots able to travel between council areas for non-essential reasons.
