Covid Scotland: Highest daily deaths since March ahead of level zero move

Scotland has recorded its highest number of daily deaths as a result of coronavirus since March, according to the latest figures.

Data from Public Health Scotland (PHS) revealed 11 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for covid-19 in the last 24-hour period, despite overall case numbers falling.

Four of the deaths were recorded in the NHS Lothian health board area, with two in the City of Edinburgh local authority boundary.

The PHS daily update found 311 new cases in the Lothians, contributing to 2,636 across the country from an 8.1 per cent test positivity rate.

It represents the highest daily death total recorded since March 16.

A further 346 people have been hospitalised while ten more are in intensive care.

It comes just 24 hours after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the country would drop to level zero of coronavirus restrictions as planned on July 19 - albeit with certain modifications.

Bars will be allowed to extend their opening hours until midnight, while up to eight people from four households are permitted to meet up indoors from Monday.

Funerals and weddings may now operate with a capacity of up to 200 people under the new guidelines.

However, deputy first minister John Swinney warned a raft of new infections would likely be recorded in the days following July 19, with up to 10,500 new cases expected per day.

Meanwhile, the vaccine rollout has continued to gather pace as Scotland closes in on inoculating four million people.

In the latest update, 3,948,446 have received the first dose of either the Pfizer, Moderna or Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines, while 2,914,904 have had both jags.
