Covid Scotland: Fully vaccinated EU and USA visitors will not need to quarantine under new plans

People coming into Scotland from the European Union and the United States of America may soon no longer have to quarantine if they have received both doses of an approved Covid-19 vaccine.

Under potential new travel rules, holidaymakers and other individuals who fly into Scotland from either the EU or the USA would no longer be required to self-isolate for 10 days.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney appeared to confirm that talks with the UK Government regarding the travel changes are ongoing.

As reported by the Daily Record, he told BBC's Good Morning Scotland that "there will be further discussions in the course of today, as I understand it, involving Scottish ministers".

He added: "We are very open to that discussion.

"We've got to take a set of gradual well evidence steps in our journey to the relaxation of the Covid restrictions and to enabling people to live lives more closely aligned to what we experienced before Covid.

"The government in Scotland is engaged in all of those conversations to make sure we take the right steps in the right fashion to make sure that people can get on with their lives and ministers will be involved in those conversations today."

Any changes could come into force next week, with a decision expected at some point today - according to reports.

The announcement follows news that aviation firms have claimed a trial has demonstrated the UK can safely exempt fully vaccinated US and EU visitors from self-isolation.

Heathrow Airport, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic said their 10-day pilot scheme proved the vaccination status of travellers can be efficiently and accurately checked away from the border.

Since July 19, people arriving in the UK from amber list locations, such as the US, have had to have received both doses of a vaccine in the UK to avoid the requirement to self-isolate for 10 days.

The rules exclude those who have been inoculated elsewhere in the world.
