Covid Scotland: First people to enter Edinburgh quarantine hotel leave after one day

The first people to arrive at Edinburgh Airport yesterday and be taken to a quarantine hotel, have been released already due to an 'error'.

Only travellers coming in from overseas countries will be required to stay at one of six designated hotels in a bid to avoid importation of the virus, with Ireland exempt - although travellers from Ireland and other UK countries are still expected to self-isolate for ten days.

Chun Wong arrived in the capital yesterday morning with his young daughter Kiernan and was taken to the Doubletree Hilton in Edinburgh which is being used as the capital's quarantine venue.

But Mr. Wong revealed to the BBC that they have been told they can leave after just a day because there has actually been a mistake.

Because the father and daughter flew from America, before boarding a connecting flight from Dublin to Edinburgh, they're actually exempt from having to remain in a hotel for ten days.

Because of a loophole in the system, those arriving from Dublin do not have to pay to enter a hotel because Ireland is being considered 'exempt' from the new rules.

Yesterday in a public interview Mr Wong said that he would do "whatever it takes" to be able to enter Scotland in order to be reunited with his wife and the mother of his child, Danielle, who lives in Fife.

The family has been separated for 16 months now due to strict quarantine rules in the US, with Danielle working as a key worker in the Kingdom helping people with addictions.

But last night Mr. Wong received a phone call from officials telling them that there had been a mistake and that he could leave the hotel if you wanted to.

He told the BBC: "I received a call from reception saying a gentleman from the airport would like to talk to me.

"He said that since I landed in Dublin first and then got a connecting flight to here, I was not required to quarantine in a hotel. I still have to quarantine and do the self-testing kit on the second and eighth day, but they said it was an error on their part."

Mr Wong confirmed that he did stay another night at the hotel because he was so tired from traveling, but today he will be free to return to Fife to self-isolate.
