Glasgow concerts and events cancelled due to covid fears over Christmas season

Amy MacDonald, Deacon Blue and Del Amitri are among a growing list of acts postponing gigs this Christmas as omicron cases rocket across the UK.

A number of big shows set to go ahead at the city's Hydro, Barrowlands and O2 Academy over the next week are now being cancelled.

The Scottish Government has issued advice urging people to limit social gatherings to three households but stopped short of new legal restrictions on live event numbers.

Deacon Blue frontman Ricky Ross hit out over the lack of government action to support artists and live venues, adding "people shouldn't be asked to attend gigs just now".

Hospitality venues will now be required to reintroduce measures such as physical distancing used at the start of the pandemic – including table service, app-based ordering and mask wearing while moving around indoors.

Amy MacDonald – Hydro, Friday December 17

Amy MacDonald has postponed tonight's sell-out show at the Hydro until March 18 2022.

Announcing the news on Twitter, she wrote: "I'm so sorry to everyone - we tried everything to make the gig happen.

"We were left stuck between a rock and a hard place but ultimately the safety of the fans and crew has to come first.

"Have a wonderful Christmas, here’s hoping 2022 is a little brighter - we’ll see you in March."

Deacon Blue – Hydro, Sunday December 19

Deacon Blue have postponed the Glasgow date of their Cities of Love tour until May 7 2022.

Lead singer Ricky Ross said he was disappointed that "authorities" had not made an announcement on concerts given the rise of the Omicron variant.

He tweeted that it was clear to the band that they "should not be playing and people shouldn't be asked to attend gigs just now."

"It is obvious to us that gathering in large numbers would be a huge risk for our fans and our crew and with the authorities only offering broad advice we decided that it would be best for everyone if we postponed the shows until the spring."

The Charlatans – O2 Academy, Saturday December 18

The Charlatans have postponed their remaining 2021 UK shows due to members of their crew testing positive for covid.

They said they felt it was "unfair for our audience to have to choose between exposure to the virus or to avoid the show".

"We know our fans will understand as safety is our number one priority."

Supergrass – O2 Academy, Sunday December 19

Supergrass made the "incredibly tough" call to postpone their December shows and it said "would be the wrong thing to do" as omicron cases continue to rise.

They said: "We want to give you all the best show we can, everyone to feel safe and for no fan to lose out at Christmas time due to all the uncertainty at the moment. We’re gutted to have to do this and we hope you all understand.”

Del Amitri – Glasgow Barrowland, Monday December 20 and Tuesday December 21

Alt-rockers Del Amitri hope to reschedule their two shows at the Barras next week.

They said: "We're absolutely gutted to be doing this, but at the same time we don't want to be contributing in any way to ruining everyone's Christmases by encouraging people to come out and see us."
