Covid Scotland: Euro 2020 fan events linked to nearly 2,000 new Scots cases

More than 1,990 Scots who had tested positive for covid have been linked to watching Euro 2020 matches.

Public Health Scotland report that nearly two thirds of cases, or 1,294 people, reported travelling to London to watch Scotland's game with England, including 397 people who attended the match at Wembley Stadium on June 18.

Its analysis of the Test & Protect Case Management System data reveal that between 11 to 28 June 2021, 1,991 people normally resident in Scotland with a laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 diagnosis were identified as having attended one or more Euro 2020 events during their infectious period i.e. a time in which they may have unknowingly transmitted their infection to others.

The government body said it had tagged positive covid cases if they attended either a Euro 2020 organised event, such as a match at Hampden or Wembley Stadium or the Fanzone at Glasgow Green.

Fifty-five of those who tested positive reported being at the Fanzone on Glasgow Green, 38 had been at Scotland's match with Croatia at Hampden, and 37 at the team's opening match against the Czech Republic.

People who tested positive after attending an informal gathering, such as a pub or a house party to watch a match, were also tagged.

Nearly three quarters, or 1,470 cases, with a Euro 2020 tag were between 20 and 39 years of age. Nine of every ten cases were male.

Attendance at hospitality venues (e.g. pubs) was the most frequently reported tag, representing 34% of all tags (multiple tags could be reported).

PHS is working with Test & Protect and NHS boards to ensure that all public health actions are taken in the close contacts of these EURO 2020 cases as part of the 32,539 cases that were reported to the Test & Protect Case Management System during this period.

It comes as a total of 10,168 people have died in Scotland with confirmed or suspected coronavirus, according to the National Records of Scotland(NRS).

The latest data shows Covid-19 was noted on the death certificates of 17 people registered in the week to June 21-27, an increase of four on the previous week.

Of the deaths, two people were under 65, five were 65-74, and 10 were over 75.

There were two deaths in each of Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Edinburgh, Clackmannanshire, East Ayrshire and Midlothian and one death in each of Dundee, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire.

The statistics differ from the lab-confirmed coronavirus deaths announced daily by the Scottish Government because the NRS figures include suspected or probable cases of Covid-19.
