Covid Scotland: English rule-breakers travel to Edinburgh for lockdown party

Five people have been hit with fines after travelling from England to Edinburgh for an illegal party over the festive period.

Police Scotland call logs reveal sites, like booking.com, were used to hire space for large gatherings over the Christmas and New Year period, reports the BBC.

Officers were given emergency powers in the wake of the coronavirus crisis to disperse parties in August last year.

Data shows that police have since been called out nearly 7,000 times.

While the BBC reported a "marked increase in anecdotal reports of house parties" in rented accommodation over the festive period, Police Scotland data shows that officers responded to the highest number of weekly house party breaches in Edinburgh during September.

However, during the month of December, police callouts to illegal parties in the capital were at their highest in five months and the force says that many go unreported.

One incident saw a number of people travel from England to the capital the week before Christmas to stay in rental accommodation. Police slapped five of the rule-breakers with fixed penalty notices.

Reports also showed growing resistance to officers responding to illegal house parties.

In one incidence, Edinburgh officers had to force entry into a property after those flouting the rules refused to allow them in. It resulted in one man being arrested after threatening officers, while another was arrested after trying to hide in an upstairs bedroom.

Edinburgh officers were also called out to large student parties on the weekend of 4-6 December, where they stopped two ongoing parties with a total of 70 students present
