Covid Scotland: Eight deaths and 5,858 cases recorded in past 24 hours

Scotland has recorded the deaths of eight coronavirus patients as well as 5,858 cases in the past 24 hours, according to the latest data.

Figures published today by the Scottish Government indicate this takes the death toll under the daily measure - of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - to 8,111.

The daily test positivity rate is 14.2% from a total of 43,450 new tests that reported results.

A total of 494 people were in hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19, with 49 patients in intensive care.

So far, 4,098,078 people have received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination and 3,640,865 have had their second.

The latest figures come after a public health expert said that while Scotland is heading into a 'difficult period', going back into lockdown will be the Government's last resort.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast today, Professor Linda Bauld of University of Edinburgh said that recent decisions from the Scottish Government had resulted in a 'perfect storm' of cases.
