Covid Scotland: Edinburgh school confirms further cases days before summer break

An Edinburgh High School has confirmed a number of people are self-isolating after coronavirus cases were confirmed for the second time in a month.

Firrhill High School and NHS Lothian alerted parents this week to cases in the school on Monday and once again on Wednesday (June 23).

A letter from NHS Lothian to parents stated that the track and trace process has been completed, however any pupil feeling unwell or developing symptoms should take a test.

A statement read: "Everyone who has been in close contact with the confirmed case has been identifies, contacted and advised to stay at home and self-isolate for 10 days, and to get tested.

"The school has multiple control measures in place to protect against COVID-19, supported with regular testing of staff to limit any onwards transmission within the school environment."

This is the second time in a month that the school has reported the virus to be within the building, after a case was also identified at the beginning of June.

It comes as Edinburgh and the Lothians saw their highest number of daily cases on record on Wednesday, with 830 new transmissions reported across the health board.

The highest daily number before that had been just 24 hours previous on Tuesday (June 22), where 463 new cases were identified.

Speaking about the latest figures, Nicola Sturgeon said the surge should be "taken seriously", after nearly 3,000 new cases were reported across Scotland as a whole.
