Covid Scotland: Edinburgh's top ten Covid-stricken areas as Omicron variant cases rise

The ten Edinburgh coronavirus hotspots have been revealed in the latest official statistics.

As of December 9, there were 236 new cases in Edinburgh, with 1,772 across the seven day period of December 1 and 7, and 19,770 cases in the whole of Scotland during the same period.

Edinburgh is under the national average of Covid cases, with a positivity rate of 334.8 per 100,000 residents, compared to the Scotland wide figure of 361.7.

There are 38 Edinburgh neighbourhoods in the highest zone for Covid rates according to the latest Public Health Scotland data, with infection rates well over 400 per 100,000.

However, the ten highest in this zone include Queensferry East (39 cases), South Gyle (36 cases), Craigmillar (36 cases), Corstorphine North (33 cases), East Craigs South (34 cases), Trinity (30 cases), Blackhall (36 cases), Clermiston and Drumbrae (33 cases), Currie West (30 cases), and Portobello (29 cases).

Corstorphine North had the highest rate with 33 new infections amongst their 3,848 residents over the last week, and a rate of 857.6 per 100,000.

However, Queensferry East had more cases than Corstorphine North at 39 new positive results over the last seven days, but with a lower infection rate of 778.8 per 100,000.

South Gyle had 36 new infections from their 5,027 residents.

Trinity had 30 new cases from 4,739 locals in the area.

Blackhall had 36 from their 6,028 residents this week.

East Craigs South had 34 from their 5,294 residents over the last seven days.

And Craigmillar had 36 positive tests from 5,391 residents.

Whilst, Carrick Knowe continues to be the only neighbourhood in Edinburgh to have suppressed the contagion over the past seven days.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has urged the people of Scotland to continue to follow the latest guidelines on coronavirus, amidst the UK Government's 2020 Christmas party blunder.

In a tweet last night, the First Minister said: "Re UK gov announcement of Covid Plan B today, all these protections are already in place in Scotland and have helped us get Delta cases down.

"Tough question we all face in period ahead is whether these protections will be strong enough against a rapidly spreading Omicron variant...

"Even if (and it is still if) Omicron doesn’t cause more severe disease, the numbers of people who might be infected by its faster spread will create big challenges for NHS and economy - so we need to consider carefully (but quite quickly) what proportionate response needed.

"In meantime, all of us complying strictly with current protections will help. And even if you feel angry with a politician just now, please remember just how important compliance is for the health & safety of you, your loved ones and the country."
