Covid Scotland: Edinburgh reports 400 new cases overnight as Lothians cases soar

Edinburgh remains Scotland’s coronavirus hotspot after topping the table for newly confirmed cases - despite the number of positive recorded tests falling in the latest 24-hour period.

Data from Public Health Scotland (PHS) showed 420 new covid-19 infections had been detected in the Capital between Saturday and Sunday, more than 120 fewer than the previous day’s figures.

However, it remains enough to put the city ahead of Glasgow on the list of the country’s worst-hit local authorities.

Abbeyhill, Bruntsfield, Corstorphine, Drylaw, Portobello and Niddrie are among the areas to be hit hardest in the third wave of the virus, with the dangerous Delta variant continuing to spread widely.

Cases in East and West Lothian also fell to 83 and 88 respectively, while new positives in Midlothian were placed at 60.

It means the total number of cases across the NHS Lothian health board region fell from more than 800 to 657 for the reporting period.

One further death as a result of covid-19 - where the disease was detected up to 28 days before a patient passed - was also confirmed by the Scottish Government.

Hospital admissions and ICU numbers are not updated as part of the weekend figures.

Meanwhile, the vaccine rollout continues to make steady progress, with 60.3 per cent of the population now having received both doses of either the Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer or Moderna jags.

Over 3.7 million people across Scotland have had at least one dose of the vaccine, accounting for more than 84 per cent of the population.
